In this issue I’m featuring hand painted photographs, one of my best-loved mediums. The results have a singular, painterly quality that hybrid and digital photography cannot emulate. All of these works begin with black and white film negatives and need to be printed on special darkroom paper that accepts oil paint specifically created for use with photography.

A delightful aspect of hand painted photographs is that each one is unique and no two will ever be exactly the same. Even if I use the same negative and a similar color palette the results will have varying characteristics.

This technique was first introduced in the 1800s as a method to add color to photographs before color photography existed.

I prefer to use the paint in ways that are not exactly representational, but rather invite our imagination to wander into another atmosphere.

A meditative abstraction of oak trees reflecting in water, this image was taken at Descanso Gardens in the Japanese Garden’s koi-filled streams.
