Surreal Abstractions

Photomontage is an intriguing method of combining and layering images into abstract or surrealistic visions. I’ve always been attracted to surrealism and admire many of the great artists from the early 20th century who broke through the norms and limits of acceptable realistic representation to freely express unconscious and interior feelings in their work. Max Ernst, Man Ray, and Joan Miró are among my favorites.

Abstractions entice us to go beyond our preconceptions and follow a path into curiosity of the unknown. It’s a lovely journey.

Pterodactyl Abstraction
Photomontage.

This image was shot with film, looking into a window where a pterodactyl model was hanging from the ceiling. It was already a mysterious scene when I came upon it because clouds reflecting in the glass created a double exposure effect. I added in some mighty oak trees, and appreciate how the angular shapes and grainy quality of the film enhance the composition.

Another Time

Recently I created a new photomontage series titled Penumbra, layering portraiture, trees and color into surrealistic depictions. At the base of this image is a self-portrait made during an era when I was still developing black and white film negatives in a darkroom (my converted shower stall).

Visceral I

Humans often feel disconnected from the natural world, yet we are made out of the same fundamental elements as everything else here on earth and are profoundly connected within this fragile atmosphere.

Hejira
Photomontage.

This formation of pelicans soaring over the Pacific Ocean near Avala Beach, California was an inspiring sight. I added a geometrically angled color pattern that singles out and frames individuals within the group, each on its own journey to a shared destination.
