Katina’s latest series “Street Pieces” advances her established technique and brings to light new wonders that are literally right at our feet. Created from photos of cracked asphalt (though all but unrecognizable as such), these compositions blaze with color, texture and allusive density, mapping the nexus between the built world and nature. Cartographic aspects within the jagged visual contours of these pieces—along with the characteristic vital color—indicate a decided evolution in Katina’s work. This mature style has emerged through not only a mastery of technique, but also an elemental creative approach, characterized by a fascination with randomness and the sly machinations of perception.
